BRIGADIER GENERAL CHRISTOPHER G. BATTERTON

Brig. Gen. Christopher G. Batterton is the Assistant Adjutant General for Air and Strategic Initiatives for the Virginia Air National Guard. The Virginia Air National Guard is comprised of over 1250 Airmen serving across multiple operational and support missions: F-22 operations and maintenance; global intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance; cyber protection; global logistics support; Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and high-yield Explosive Enhanced Response Force Package (CERFP), RED HORSE civil engineering, combat weather support, security forces, medical support and Base Operating Support. The VaANG meets its federal missions to train, equip, and deploy Airmen ready to fly, fight and win; to provide continuous imagery analysis and intelligence support; to conduct defensive cyber operations and deliver fighter/bomber MICAP supplies worldwide. He also ensures the VaANG responds to state and national emergencies as directed by the Governor of Virginia. General Batterton serves as a Deputy Combined Forces Air Component Commander for First Air Force.

General Batterton received his commission from the United States Air Force Academy in 1999. He attended pilot training at Vance AFB where he was a Distinguished Graduate and winner of the Air Education and Training Command Commander’s Trophy. Following pilot training, Brig Gen Batterton attended the F-16 Basic Course at Luke AFB where he earned Distinguished Graduate and winner of the academic and air-to-air top gun awards. His first operational assignment was at the 80th Fighter Squadron (FS), 8th Fighter Wing (FW), Kunsan Air Base, Republic of Korea. Following Korea, Brig Gen Batterton was assigned to the 79th FS, 20th FW, Shaw AFB, S.C. where he upgraded to Instructor Pilot and participated in several TDYs and deployments. In 2005, Brig Gen Batterton was selected as one of the initial operational cadre of the F/A-22 in the 27th FS, 1st FW, Langley AFB, Va. General Batterton is a command pilot with more than 2000 hours in fighter aircraft, including leading missions in multiple CONUS and OCONUS exercises and participating in deployments to include Operation IRAQI FREEDOM and Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.

In 2009, General Batterton joined the Virginia Air National Guard’s 192d FW as a Drill Status Guardsman. He has served as a 149th FS Flight Commander, Wing Chief of Safety, 192d Operations Support Squadron Commander, 192d Intelligence Squadron Commander, 192d Wing Vice Commander, 192d Operations Group Commander, and 192d Wing Commander. General Batterton has also worked in civilian industry since joining the VaANG, holding a variety of leadership positions, ultimately ascending to the position of Chief Growth Officer for a defense services company. Prior to his current assignment, General Batterton served as the JFHQ Director for Strategy, Plans and Policies, Richmond, Va.
