Commanding General (Army National Guard), Army Materiel Command
Major General John E. Stevens assumed duties as Deputy Commanding General (Army National Guard), Army Materiel Command on 1 February 2001. General Stevens advises the Commanding General and Deputy Commanding General on all matters affecting the Army National Guard (ARNG) including policy and regulatory issues, use of Army National Guard forces in Army Materiel Command missions, and Army National Guard readiness issues.
The general's military career began with his commissioning as a second lieutenant of artillery through the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps program at the University of Dayton in 1968. He joined the Ohio Army National Guard in 1970 and served in air defense artillery and combat engineer units. General Stevens joined the Pennsylvania Army National Guard's 213th Area Support Group in 1975. He assumed command of the 165th Military Police in 1986. In 1989, he led the 165th through its reorganization to 1st Battalion, 213th Air Defense Artillery. From January 1990 to September 1993, he commanded the 28th Infantry Division Support Command and led it through reorganization to the multifunctional support battalion structure. Then, as the Assistant Adjutant General from September 1993 to February 2001, he was responsible for long range planning, logistics, information management, and safety for the 16,000 members of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard.
