BRIGADIER GENERAL SUE ELLEN SCHUERMAN
Brig. Gen. Sue Ellen Schuerman is the Director of the Office of Complex Investigations, National Guard Bureau. The Directorate conducts administrative investigations of unrestricted reports of sexual assault when criminal law enforcement entities, such as military criminal investigative organizations or civilian law enforcement agencies, have declined or do not have jurisdiction to investigate and a National Guard nexus has been identified.
Brig. Gen. Schuerman received a direct commission as an Air Force Judge Advocate in September 1994 and served five years on active duty. In March 2000, Brig. Gen. Schuerman separated from active duty and transferred to the reserve component where she served as an Individual Mobilization Augmentee Judge Advocate until 2012. In 2012, she joined the Arizona Air National Guard and served as the Staff Judge Advocate for the 162d Wing for six years.
Since 2018, Brig. Gen. Schuerman has served as the Air National Guard Assistant to the Staff Judge Advocate at Air Mobility Command and to the Director of the Administrative Law Directorate in The Office of the Judge Advocate General. Prior to assuming her current position, Brig. Gen. Schuerman served as the Air National Guard Assistant to the General Counsel, National Guard Bureau, where she was the primary ANG legal advisor to the General Counsel and provided strategic engagement to legal personnel throughout the 54 States, Territories, and District of Columbia. Brig. Gen. Schuerman concurrently served as a senior member of the Air National Guard Judge Advocate Council, providing leadership and planning for all Air National Guard legal offices, including some 550 judge advocates and paralegals throughout the nation. Brig. Gen. Schuerman’s primary area of civilian expertise is employment law where she has practiced with federal agencies and in the General Counsel’s office of the University of Arizona.
