BRIGADIER GENERAL MARK P. GAUL
Retired
Brig. Gen. Mark P. Gaul served as the Air National Guard Assistant to the Deputy Surgeon General, Headquarters Air Force, Pentagon, Arlington, Virginia. In his former role, he assisted the Deputy Surgeon General in the overall operation of the Air Force Medical Service, composed of a $6.1 billion, 44,000-person integrated health care delivery system across the United States and overseas. Key areas of responsibilities include: clinical operations, aeromedical evacuation, global force management, readiness, strategic medical plans, programs and budget, medical force management and medical information systems management. General Gaul facilitates Air Force Medical Service operations through major commands, joint service agencies, the Assistant Secretary of Defense (Health Affairs), the Defense Health Agency and the Department of Veterans Affairs.
In his civilian capacity, Dr. Gaul serves as a Senior Physician and voting member on the United States Air Force (USAF) Physical Evaluation Board (PEB) at the Air Force Personnel Center, Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph, Texas, which is part of the Integrated Disability Evaluation System (IDES) with Department of Veterans Affairs. He primarily adjudicates USAF Informal or Formal PEB cases but also performs medical records reviews, renders medical opinions and provides medical advice to other Board Members. As an Air National Guardsman, Dr. Gaul liases with ANG’s Readiness Center and 90 Wings regarding ANG IDES medical case management and ensures voting representation on IDES councils or training events and all Air Reserve Component Informal or Formal Boards.
General Gaul was commissioned as Army Medical Service Corps in 1986 through Reserve Officer Training Corps at the University of South Dakota, as Army Medical Corps in 1992 after completing his Doctor of Medicine from the University of South Dakota School of Medicine, and as Air Force Medical Corps with the Texas ANG in 2003 after completing Air Force Residencies/Board Certifications in Aerospace and Occupational Medicine at Brooks Air Force Base (AFB), Texas. His previous assignments include North American Aerospace Defense Command/U.S. Northern Command Deputy Surgeon, NGB Deputy Joint Surgeon, Director (The Air Surgeon) ANG Medical Services and the Texas Air National Guard State Air Surgeon.
