BRIGADIER GENERAL JOHN R. MULVEY
Retired
Brig Gen John R. Mulvey, was the Medical Advisor to the TAG and ATAG/Air, formerly Chief of Staff for the Delaware Air National Guard, prior to this was State Air Surgeon for Delaware and Joint
Surgeon of the Joint Force Headquarters. In this position he provides up to date medical advice
to the Headquarters Staff during the Covid 19 pandemic.
General Mulvey started his career in Medicine and the Military in June of 1982 as a recipient of the Health Professions Scholarship Program. He completed the Health Professions Indoctrination Course at Maxwell Air Force Base in Sept of 1983, and completed his Medical Doctorate at Thomas Jefferson University in June of 1986. He was then assigned to Eglin Air Force Base for his Residency in Family Practice, where he was named Chief Resident in his third year. Upon completion of residency he was assigned to the 432nd Medical Squadron Misawa AFB, Misawa Japan from July 1989 to July 1992, where he took over as Chief of Family Practice during the last 2 years of that assignment. He completed the Aviation Medicine Primary course at Brooks Air Force Base in November of 1990. In August 1992 he was assigned to Dover AFB initially in the Family Practice department but then found his first Squadron Medical Element job with the C5 squadron during the last few months of that one year assignment. In September 1993 he left Active Duty and became the Chief of Aerospace Medicine at the 166th Medical Group of the Delaware ANG. He was named Commander of the 166th in February of 2003. He remained Commander until 15 April 2012, when he became the State Air Surgeon and Joint Surgeon, serving in that capacity until his promotion to Brigadier General on 29 September 2019, becoming Chief of Staff. He was to retire in April 2020, but was asked to stay on an additional 6 months as the Covid 19 Crisis was unfolding as a senior Medical Advisor to the TAG and ATAG/Air.
He has been deployed to Antarctica, Southwest Asia in direct support of Operation Enduring Freedom, and in winter of 2017 to Osan Air Force Base in support of another Guard unit’s deployment. He completed Air War College by Correspondence in 2012. He is a practicing Family Physician for Mulvey Family Practice and Division Lead for Ambulatory Medicine at Christiana Care Union Hospital. He is also a 2400 hour Instrument Rated Commercial Pilot, having earned his initial Private Pilot certificate in his third year of Medical school. He flies for Angel Flight, a volunteer organization providing patients with General Aviation airlift to and from routine medical care. He also serves as the National President of the Flying Physicians Association.

CIVILIAN OCCUPATION
Practice Owner, Mulvey Family Practice; solo Family Physician, with Certificate of Added Qualification in Sports Medicine; and Senior Aviation Medical Examiner. He also continues to work occasionally as a Hospitalist at Christiana Care Union Hospital.
Division Leader of Ambulatory Medicine, Christiana Care Union Hospital, coordinating patient care within and outside the hospital and leading the Community Physicians who refer their patients for care within the Hospital. In this role he also provides occasional weekend shift coverage for the Hospitalist group.
