Director of the Joint Staff, Vermont National Guard
Brigadier Mark S. Lovejoy serves as the Director of the Joint Staff for the Vermont National Guard. In this assignment he is responsible for managing programs and operations for the Vermont National Guard's Joint Staff and overseeing execution of plans and projects that affect the 4,000 members of the Vermont National Guard.
General Lovejoy received his commission in 1984, following his 1983 graduation from Vermont's Officer Candidate School. Prior to receiving his commission he served as an enlisted soldier in the Vermont Army National Guard from 1976 to 1984. He has commanded at all levels from platoon to brigade, and led 1-172 Armor during its deployment to Iraq in 2005 and 2006 as part of a task organization that included the 28th Infantry Division's 2nd Brigade, as well as the 2nd Marine Division. General Lovejoy's completed courses include: Armor Officer Basic and Advanced; Combined Arms and Services Staff School; Army Command and General Staff Officer; Federal Contract Law; and National Preparedness Leadership Initiative.

General Lovejoy is a dual-status technician in the Vermont Army National Guard. During his career he has been a member of both the Active Guard and Reserve and dual-status technician programs. His current full time assignment is Director, Joint Staff. General Lovejoy serves as the principal full-time representative and spokesman of the Joint Staff and acts in the absence of the Adjutant General or designated representative in all Joint Staff matters.
