Director of Joint Staff, Missouri National Guard
Brigadier General David W. Newman is Director of Joint Staff, Missouri National Guard. In this capacity, he manages joint military functions at the State Headquarters and is also responsible for joint military programs that pertain to the command, control, operation and management of joint functions throughout the state of Missouri. These duties ensure that contingency plans provide guidance for deployment of National Guard assets in response to a wide range of emergency operations. General Newman directs the development, execution, and supervision of all Joint Staff programs that prepare the state for contingency operations in either federal or state emergencies.
General Newman received his commission through the Reserve Officer Training Program at Southern Illinois University in 1977. He entered the United States Air Force as an Air Battle Manager and has maintained Combat Mission Ready status in multiple weapon systems for 35 years. General Newman has completed both the United States Air Force Interceptor Weapons School and Fighter Weapons Schools receiving Distinguished Graduate in both schools. His first assignment was with the 23rd Air Division, which was responsible for the air defense of the upper Midwest. He then served as Director of Operations, 794th Air Control Squadron before being selected as an instructor for the United States Air Force Air Battle Manager Course. In 1983 General Newman joined the Kansas Air National Guard and later transferred to the Missouri Air National Guard as Commander, 121st Air Control Squadron. In 1999, General Newman became Commander, 157th Air Operations Group. General Newman was selected in his current position as Director of Joint Staff, Missouri National Guard in July 2012.
