Assistant Adjutant General - Air, South Dakota National Guard
Brigadier General Wayne M. Shanks assumed the duties as Assistant Adjutant General-Air, South Dakota National Guard 10 April 2010. He is responsible to the Adjutant General for the operational readiness of the South Dakota Air National Guard and the unit's ability to perform its federal and state missions. As of 1 November 2010, General Shanks is also dual-hatted as the Air National Guard Assistant to the Commander, Air Force Material Command, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. He serves as advisor to the Commander, maintaining appropriate liaison with Air Logistics Centers on matters related to the Air National Guard, and monitors material support of Air National Guard units and associated impact on operations readiness.
General Shanks entered military service in 1974 when he enlisted in the South Dakota Air National Guard. He received his commission in 1987 and became the Supply Management and Systems Officer. Other positions he held during his commission include the Chief of Supply, Logistics Squadron Commander, Maintenance Squadron Commander, and Logistics Group Commander. In 2004, General Shanks assumed the title of Commander, 114th Maintenance Group. General Shanks served nationally as the maintenance representative for the Air National Guard Air Director Field Advisory Council, Air National Guard Combat Air Force Maintenance Council Chair (F22, F16, F15, A10, and Remotely Piloted Aircraft), F16 Maintenance Council Chair, member of the Air National Guard Logistics Board of Advisors, and Air Force/Air National Guard Air Directorate Field Advisory Council Repair Network Integration committee member.
