Assistant Adjutant General - Air, California National Guard
Brigadier General Jonathan S. Flaugher is the Assistant Adjutant General - Air, California Air National Guard, and also serves as Chief of Staff, California Air National Guard. He monitors mission effectiveness and a wide range of programs and activities involving five major field-level organizations comprised of nearly 5,000 military and civilian personnel serving at ten locations within California. General Flaugher oversees development of operationally trained, equipped and mission ready forces for supporting national defense requirements world wide, as well as emergency response, relief, and recovery operations throughout California.
General Flaugher was commissioned through the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps at North Carolina State University in 1977 and was awarded a regular commission while on active duty in 1982. He spent several years in the tactical air weapons control field before graduating from undergraduate pilot training in 1980. His first few flying assignments developed a fundamental understanding of continental air defense concepts before moving on to a 'Hunter Killer' anti surface to air missile role in Germany towards the end of the cold war. Following this conflict while assigned to United States Air Forces in Europe Headquarters at Ramstein Air Base, he was tasked to reorganize all war reserve materiel and manage a large reduction in United States fighter wings and bases in the European area of responsibility. In 1993, he was transferred to the Fresno Air National Guard base in Fresno California to be the Active Duty Advisor to the 144th Fighter Wing ensuring the unit could meet gaining command standards. After nearly 18 years of active duty service, he became an Air National Guardsman in 1995 and has served as a traditional Guardsman and as a full time technician. While in Fresno, General Flaugher participated in the war on drugs flying many missions out of bases in the Southern Command and Northern Air Defense Area of Responsibility, flew missions over Iraq enforcing United Nations sanctions during two Operation Southern Watch deployments, and spearheaded air defense and air sovereignty reactions to the events of 9/11 and the ensuing Operation Noble Eagle. He has held all advance flight qualifications through Instructor Pilot and Standards and Evaluations Flight Examiner. General Flaugher also has experience as the airborne command element on board forward based AWACs aircraft and has led many aircraft operational deployments. While with the 144th Fighter Wing he commanded at the group and wing level.
