Assistant Division Commander, 36th Infantry
Division - Texas Army National Guard
Brigadier General Stephen G. Sanders assumed the duties of Assistant Division Commander, Support, 36th Infantry Division, Texas Army National Guard in May 2009. He serves as the principal advisor on support matters to the Division Commander. These responsibilities include preparation of subordinate units for Overseas Contingency Operations as well as Defense Support to Civil Authority missions in support of Homeland Defense and Security.
General Sanders received his commission in May 1980 through the Reserve Officers Training Corps at Sam Houston State University, where he received a Bachelor of Science in Physics. His assignments include various positions at the tactical, operational and strategic levels. This includes command of a combat engineer company and battalion. Upon redeployment of his battalion from Operation Iraqi Freedom III in support of Headquarters Multinational Forces Iraq and 18th Airborne Corp, he assumed command of the 36th Infantry Division, Engineer Brigade. After completing the Army War College, General Sanders served as the commander of the newly formed 136th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, Texas Army National Guard. Both brigades proved invaluable in developing the Texas National Guard's ability to support Homeland Defense and Security missions in recent years. During the 36th Infantry Division's deployment in support of Operations New Dawn, General Sanders oversaw several reconstruction teams, logistical preparations for the redeployment of United States forces out of southern Iraq and the establishment of the United States State Department consulate in Basrah.
