Assistant Adjutant General - Air, Iowa National Guard
Brigadier General J. Derek Hill is Assistant Adjutant General - Air, Iowa National Guard. He is responsible for ensuring units of the Iowa Air National Guard are organized, manned, equipped, trained and ready to accomplish their assigned state and federal missions. He serves as principal advisor to The Adjutant General on matters pertaining to the Iowa Air National Guard.
General Hill received his commission through Direct Appointment in May 1985. During his initial five year active duty tour, he was an Assistant Staff Judge Advocate at Little Rock Air Force Base and a Circuit Trial Counsel in the 4th Judicial Circuit. In 1990 he transferred to the Air Force Reserves and continued as a prosecutor in the 4th Circuit and was later assigned to Headquarters, United States Special Operations Command. General Hill transferred to the Air National Guard in 1987 and assumed duties as Staff Judge Advocate for the United States Virgin Islands National Guard. In 2003, he transferred to the Iowa Air National Guard as Staff Judge Advocate. In Iowa General Hill has served as Director of Staff and Chief of Staff. From 2007 to 2010 he was dual hatted as Chief, Joint Staff.
