MAJOR GENERAL PAUL J. SULLIVAN

Major General Paul J. Sullivan is the Chief of Staff, United States Northern Command, Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado. He also serves as the Chief of Staff, Headquarters North American Aerospace Defense Command. As the North American Aerospace Defense Command Chief of Staff, he directs a joint staff to coordinate command responsibilities for aerospace warning, attack assessment and aerospace control for North America. As the United States Northern Command Chief of Staff, he directs a joint staff in order to deter, prevent and defeat threats and aggression aimed at the United States and its territories and interests within United States Northern Command's assigned areas of responsibility. Additional duties involve coordinating and directing military assistance to civil authorities, including civil support and consequence management operations when authorized by the President or Secretary of Defense.

General Sullivan was commissioned through Officer Candidate School in 1970. He earned his pilot wings from Craig Air Force Base, Ala., and served in numerous flying positions, including instructor pilot and operations officer. He is a command pilot with more than 3,000 flying hours in a variety of aircraft. General Sullivan went on to serve as the Director of Operations, Chief of Staff and Assistant Adjutant General for Air for the Ohio Air National Guard.

General Sullivan has twice served as acting Deputy Director of the Air National Guard, and following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, he assumed the additional duty of Senior Director of the Air National Guard Crisis Action Team. General Sullivan also served as Deputy Commander Air Forces, Headquarters United States Air Forces Europe, for a two-month period during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Prior to his current assignment, he was Director, Joint Staff, National Guard Bureau, Arlington, Virginia. While fulfilling the duties as Director, he assumed new duties and responsibilities that supported the National Guard Bureau's joint transformation.
