Brigadier General Mark R. Johnson is Deputy Director, Domestic Operations and Force Development (J3/7), National Guard Bureau, Arlington, Virginia. As the Deputy Director, he is charged with assisting the Director, Domestic Operations and Force Development in the direction and control of all National Guard Domestic Operations by planning, coordinating, information sharing, and integrating all aspects of National Guard Domestic Operations and development of training and exercise policies and programs to ensure joint units of the National Guard are ready to respond to their homeland defense and homeland security missions.
General Johnson was commissioned in 1974 through the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. His flying assignments began at Williams Air Force Base, Arizona as a First Assignment Instructor Pilot in the T-38. In 1980, he joined the 148th Fighter Wing, Minnesota Air National Guard, Duluth, Minnesota. As a member of the 148th Fighter Wing, he was a Pilot and Instructor Pilot in the RF-4C, F-4D, F-16ADF, and F-16C and has flown over 5,300 hours. General Johnson has held numerous command positions in the 148th Fighter Wing to include Operations Support Flight, Logistics Group, Operations Group, Vice Wing Commander and Wing Commander. He was previously dual-hatted as A3, Assistant to the Director, Air National Guard while assigned as Chief of Staff, Minnesota Air National Guard.
Following 11 September 2001, General Johnson has supported Operations Noble Eagle, Iraqi Freedom, and Enduring Freedom. On numerous occasions from October 2002 to November 2003, he served as Battle Commander, Continental North American Region Air Operations Center, Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida. In 2005, General Johnson deployed to Kirkuk Regional Air Base, Iraq, as the 506th Air Expeditionary Group and Base Commander. From February to April 2006, General Johnson served as a liaison for the National Guard Bureau to Headquarters Air Force A8, Total Force Integration, Pentagon, Washington, District of Columbia. In 2009, he deployed to United States Central Command, Tampa, Florida, as the Chief of Operations, Joint Operations Center.
