BRIGADIER GENERAL WILLIAM A. BANKHEAD

 

Commander, Land Component Command, Idaho National Guard

Brigadier General William A. Bankhead is the Commander, Land Component, Idaho National Guard. He is responsible for the training and readiness of a Joint Task Force, ensuring it is capable of responding to any and all natural disasters, civil disturbances, terrorist threats and state or federally declared emergencies.

General Bankhead, an Army Reserve Officer Training Corps Distinguished Military Graduate, received a Regular Army Commission as a second lieutenant on 8 December 1978. He began his career as a Signal Corps staff officer and platoon leader in 1st Battalion, 6th Infantry, 1st Armored Division, West Germany. General Bankhead's final assignment on active duty was an Assistant Professor of Military Science at Boise State University, Boise, Idaho.

General Bankhead joined the Idaho Army National Guard in January 1993 and has held various staff and command positions in the Installation Support Unit and the Regional Training Institute. In September 1992, he was selected as the Deputy Brigade Commander of the 116th (Heavy) Calvary Brigade (Separate). General Bankhead voluntarily deployed to Afghanistan from 2006 through 2007 where he established and ran the first Afghan War College. Upon returning from deployment he was assigned in his current position as Commander, Land Component Command.
