The Adjutant General, Mississippi
Major General William L. Freeman, Jr., is the Adjutant General for Mississippi and also serves as the Commanding General of both the Mississippi Army and Air National Guard. He is responsible for providing the State of Mississippi and the United States of America with a ready force of over 12,275 Citizen Soldiers and Airmen, equipped and trained to respond to any contingency, natural or manmade. General Freeman directs the Mississippi Military Department and oversees the development and coordination of all policies, plans, and programs of the Mississippi National Guard in concert with the Governor and legislature of the State.
General Freeman's military service began 31 July 1966, when he enlisted in the Mississippi Army National Guard's Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 4/114th Field Artillery Battalion, Newton, Mississippi, as an artilleryman. Following Officer Candidate School at the Mississippi Military Academy, he was commissioned 25 August 1969, as an artillery officer.
Prior to his current appointment, in March 1996, he was appointed as the commander of 66th Troop Command, Mississippi Army National Guard. As commander, he guided the formulation, development, training, and implementation of all programs and policies affecting the 66th Troop Command's 2,457 Citizen Soldiers.
