MAJOR GENERAL DAVID C. HARRIS

The Adjutant General, Illinois
National Guard

Major General David Harris was appointed by the Governor of Illinois as the State's 35th Adjutant General on 1 August 1999. He is the principle advisor to the Governor on military matters and serves as the Commanding General of both the Illinois Army and Air National Guard. His responsibility for managing their daily operations includes oversight of nearly 13,500 uniformed men and women.

General Harris entered military service in 1970 as a military policeman in the District of Columbia Army National Guard. He was commissioned an infantry officer upon graduation of Officer Candidate School the following year and served in the Army Reserve and the Pennsylvania Army National Guard before joining the Illinois Army National Guard in 1980. Prior to his appointment as Adjutant General, General Harris commanded a Military Police Company and a Corps Rear Area Operations Center, and he held various staff officer positions at battalion and state headquarters level. Most recently, he was Director of the Illinois National Guard's Selective Service Detachment.
