BRIGADIER GENERAL IWAN B. CLONTZ

Assistant Adjutant General - Air, North Carolina National Guard

Brigadier General Iwan B. Clontz was the Assistant Adjutant General - Air, North Carolina National Guard. In this capacity, he represented the adjutant general of North Carolina as the principal advisor on all programs and operations affecting North Carolina Air National Guard. He served as commander, North Carolina Air National Guard, where he has command and control responsibility of all Air National Guard units in North Carolina. He assisted units in setting organizational goals and empowering their commanders in executing their respective plans, programs, and missions. He analyzed and evaluated training programs and operational readiness levels to determine mission capability and unit effectiveness. He was responsible to the Adjutant General of North Carolina for the overall management of the Air National Guard component within the state. Also, General Clontz served as full-time deputy director of the North Carolina National Guard where he was responsible to the adjutant general of North Carolina for assistance with overall management of the entire state full-time staff.

With over 39 years total service, General Clontz was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant through the Academy of Military Science in 1975. He graduated from Undergraduate Navigator Training at Mather Air Force Base, California and graduated from C-130 basic/mission qualification training at Little Rock Air Force Base. After assignment to the 156th Airlift Squadron, he served as a C-130B Navigator and Flight Instructor/Evaluator and was hired as an Instructor Navigator Technician in 1984. Wing assignments included Wing Tactics Officer, Wing Plans Officer, and Director of Support. Command positions included Operations Support Flight Commander, Squadron Commander, and DETCO for North Carolina Air National Guard Forces in support of OEF/OIF. Joint Force Headquarters assignments included North Carolina Air National Guard Director, Plans and Programs, and the NCNG J-5, Plans and Program, and Chief of Staff, North Carolina Air National Guard. He is a Master Navigator with over 4,000 hours flying time.

OTHER ACHIEVEMENTS:

General Clontz served on the Board of Director for Carolinas Historic Aviation Commission. He also serves on the Board of Directors for the Carolina Freedom Foundation. He has received numerous certificates and awards for supporting 24th INF Div (M), 1721st CCT, 75th Rangers, 82nd Airborne Division.

General Clontz supervised many joint operations beginning with yearly Quick Thrust exercises involving the 24th Mech, 9th AF and daily C-130 tactical events. While Tactics Officer, he organized several Operational Readiness Exercises (OREs) using 82nd Airborne, XVII Airborne Corps and 75th Ranger assets in personnel, CDS and heavy equipment airdrops at Fort Bragg, Ft Stewart and North Field, S.C. General Clontz worked closely with the Division and Corps leaders to provide C-130 assets for their own inspections (EDRE). He continued working joint issues at the Stanly County Airport with various U. S. Army elements wishing to train in a lenient environment. As Director of Operations for the Stanly County site, General Clontz coordinated with the FAA, Airport Management, NCANG and local authorities.

CIVILIAN OCCUPATION:

In his civilian career, he worked in Sears Roebuck management and command post for Piedmont Airlines.
