Retired June 30, 2009
Brigadier General Gordon D. Toney assumed duties as Commander of the Washington Army National Guard and Assistant Adjutant General-Army on 15 September 2002. The Washington Army National Guard State Area Command headquarters is collocated with the Washington Military Department's headquarters at Camp Murray, Washington, adjacent to Fort Lewis. The Washington Army National Guard is organized into four brigade-size commands, the 81st Heavy Separate Brigade Armor, 66th Aviation Brigade (Corps), 96th Troop Command, and the 205th Regiment (Leadership). The more than 6000 Army Guard citizen-soldiers within these brigades are stationed in 37 different communities across the state.
General Toney was responsible to the Adjutant General for the coordination of policies, programs, and plans affecting the Washington Army National Guard. He ensured the recruitment and career management of soldiers and leaders along with their training readiness and equipment readiness to enable them to mobilize and deploy in support of directed missions - whether state or federal.
General Toney was commissioned a second lieutenant of Armor from the United States Military Academy on 4 June 1975. He served in a variety of active duty armor and aviation assignments before joining the Washington Army National Guard in August 1988. Since then, his key assignments include S3 and Executive Officer, 66th Aviation Brigade (Corps); Commander, 540th Aviation Group (Attack Helicopter); State Army Aviation Officer; G1; and Chief of Staff.
