Acting Director, Joint Staff, National Guard Bureau
Major General Michael H. Sumrall is the Acting Director, Joint Staff National Guard Bureau. He develops and coordinates all policies, programs and plans affecting more than a half a million Army and Air National Guard personnel. As the Director, he is responsible for the integration and coordination of National Guard capabilities in support of Homeland Defense and Defense Support to Civil Authorities. General Sumrall also provides communication and coordination channels with State and Federal agencies on behalf of the Chief, National Guard Bureau.
General Sumrall was commissioned in 1970 through the Army National Guard
Officer Candidate School in Alabama. He began his military career in 1966 as an
enlisted Soldier with the Alabama Army National Guard. He has served in various
leadership assignments throughout his career. In 1985, General Sumrall
transitioned to active duty and was assigned to the United States Army Logistics
Center at Fort Lee Virginia. He was reassigned to Redstone Arsenal Alabama in
1986 and then Aberdeen Proving Ground Maryland in 1988. After a command tour in
Germany, he returned stateside and completed the Industrial College of the Armed
Forces. Following graduation, he returned to Germany. Upon completion of two
additional assignments in Germany, he returned stateside in 1997. In 1998,
General Sumrall was assigned as the United States Property and Fiscal Officer
for Alabama. He was subsequently appointed as The Adjutant General, Alabama on 1
September 2001. General Sumrall returned to active duty on 15 April 2003 and was
assigned to United States Central Command. General Sumrall's joint assignments
include tours as Operations Officer and Senior National Guard Advisor,
Headquarters, United States European Command, Stuttgart, Germany; Deputy
Director for Logistics and Engineering, United States Central Command, Tampa,
Florida; Assistant to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff for National
Guard Matters, The Joint Staff, Pentagon, Washington District of Columbia;
Special Assistant to the Chief National Guard Bureau, Arlington, Virginia; and
his current assignment as Acting Director, Joint Staff, National Guard Bureau.
