BRIGADIER GENERAL HERBERT L. NEWTON

 

Commander - 263rd Army Air & Missile Defense Command

Major General Herbert L. Newton assumed duties as Commander, 263d Army Air and Missile Defense Command on 30 September 2007. As Commander, 263d Army Air and Missile Defense Command, General Newton is responsible for the command, control, and coordination of subordinate Air Defense brigades, battalions, and other assigned units. He is also responsible for the development of the unit into a deployable, combat ready element. In addition to these duties, General Newton serves as the Deputy Area Air Defense Commander for the complex Integrated Air Defense System supporting United States Northern Command and United States Element North American Aerospace Defense Command missions, the Theater Area Air and Missile Defense Coordinator for the United States Northern Command Theater and Commander of one of the three United States Army North theater enablers.

General Newton was commissioned as an Armor Officer in March of 1973 graduating from the Palmetto Military Academy and the South Carolina Army National Guard Junior Officer School. During his service, he has served as the Platoon Leader, Executive Officer and Commander, Company A, 1-263 Armor Battalion as well as Operations Officer (S3), Executive Officer and Commander, 1st Battalion, 263rd Armor and as the Brigade Operations Officer (S3) of the 218th Enhance Separate Brigade. General Newton later served as Commander, 218th Enhanced Separate Brigade, Newberry, South Carolina, Commander, 59th Troop Command, Columbia, South Carolina, as well as the Assistant Adjutant General, South Carolina Army National Guard.
