MAJOR GENERAL MICHAEL A. GORMAN

 

The Adjutant General, South Dakota

Major General Michael A. Gorman is the Adjutant General of South Dakota National Guard. The adjutant general commands 4,500 South Dakota Air and Army National Guardsmen and women with 950 full-time federal and state employees. He is responsible for federal and state missions, assignment of leaders, recruiting, training, equipping, mobilization, facilities and public relations. He is also responsible for formulating, developing, and coordinating all policies, plans, and programs affecting Army National Guard and Air National Guard members in South Dakota.

General Gorman serves on the Governor's cabinet as the Secretary of Military and Veteran's Affairs. In this capacity, he is the principle advisor to the Governor on military and veteran matters.

General Gorman entered military service in 1966 as an enlisted member in the South Dakota Army National Guard. He was commissioned an engineer officer upon graduation of Officer Candidate School.

General Gorman held numerous positions in the 109th Engineer Battalion, commanded South Dakota's 88th Troop Command and served as the Director of Human Resources and Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics for the South Dakota National Guard. Before he was assigned as the Adjutant General, Gorman served as the Assistant Adjutant General for the South Dakota Army National Guard.
