ALEXANDRIA, La. - This morning, two Louisiana National Guard UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters, 10 personnel (two crews and a maintenance team), left for California to support the California National Guard with fire fighting efforts.
"The team selected is fully trained, capable and ready to support this mission," said officer in charge Maj. Joseph Brocato. "Of the 10 personnel, six were mobilized in support of disaster operations for Hurricane Katrina and are familiar with the hard work and dedication required for this type of duty.
"The Louisiana National Guard is extremely pleased to provide assistance to California in their time of need. We understand first-hand the importance of supporting our fellow states, just as we have been supported during past disasters," said Maj. Gen. Bennett C. Landreneau, Louisiana National Guard adjutant general.
"Our helicopters and crews stand ready to provide support to fighting the devastating wildfires that are occurring in California. The strength of the National Guard lies in our ability to quickly respond to emergencies and disasters throughout our states and territories," he added.
The two crews are scheduled for four fuel stops today on the 1500 mile, 12-hour trip and will stop tonight. They should arrive Monday afternoon in Sacramento, Calif., where they will provide support for approximately three weeks offering state-to-state assistance during the Governor-declared state of emergency.
