    Veterans Day was established by Congress in 1954 to honor all veterans, and replaced Armistice Day, which was established in 1938 to honor veterans of WWI. Today, we care for wounded, injured and ill veterans at more than 1,200 health care facilities made up of 168 medical centers and more than 1,000 outpatient clinics across the country.     Soldiers and Airmen from the Florida National Guard are staging at Camp Blanding as part of the 3,500 troops activated by Governor Rick Scott. The 164th Air Defense Artillery Brigade's 3-116th are preparing their vehicles and supplies as Soldiers and Airmen move into the Joint Operations Center to help move those assets where they're needed once the storm passes.     U.S. Soldiers with Detachment 1, Bravo Company, 2-238 General Support Aviation Battalion, South Carolina Army National Guard, stage CH-47 Chinook helicopters at McEntire Joint National Guard Base, S.C., during a statewide response to Hurricane Matthew, Oct. 5, 2016. Approximately 1,400 South Carolina National Guard Soldiers and Airmen were activated Oct. 4, 2016. Their primary mission is supporting state and county emergency management agencies and local first responders with coastal evacuations and any services or resources needed to assist the citizens of South Carolina after Governor Nikki Haley declared a State of Emergency.   • Alaska Air Guardsmen rescue man from submerged truck in Cache Creek Aug. 29, 2016

    Members of the Alaska Air National Guard’s 210th, and 212th Rescue Squadrons, and the California Air National Guard’s 130th Rescue Squadron rescued a man who was washed downriver in his truck about 25 miles west of Talkeetna Friday, Aug. 26. Air National Guard assets were deployed for the mission, including an HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopter with two pararescuemen onboard and an MC-130P Combat Shadow aircraft, which provided aerial refueling in support of the mission. The Freestate ChalleNGe Academy provides instruction based on each cadet’s personal needs in order to prepare the cadet to take Maryland’s General Education Development (GED) exam.   • Indiana Guardsmen and Slovak Republic's Armed Forces participate in Operation Warthog July 25, 2016

    Indiana National Guard Soldiers and Airmen spent over 17 days strengthening and maintaining the bond with the Slovak Republic's Army and Air Force. Members of the 122nd Fighter Wing, 181st Intelligence Wing's Joint Terminal Air Controllers and D Company, Company D 151st Infantry Regiment's Long Range Surveillance participated in Operation Slovak Warthog, July 2016. This training also further builds the robust State Partnership Indiana and Slovakia have held for over 20 years.     The ChalleNGe refers to the lifestyle at the Maryland National Guard's Freestate Youth ChalleNGe Academy. Participants live and work in a controlled quasi-military environment, encouraging teamwork and personal growth. A 12-month post-residential phase focuses on helping enroll graduates in continued education, technical school programs or entry-level employment.     Illinois Army National Guard accelerates Exercise Anaconda with their long standing relationship with Poland as state partners through the State Partnership Program. This Polish led joint, combined exercise that took place in various locations throughout Poland included more than 1,200 National Guard members from a variety of states, the Army's active component, Reserve Component, and other allied forces to build security, readiness, and interoperability across Europe and between combined forces.   • Minnesota and Croatia celebrate 20 years of partnership June 10, 2016

    Members of the Minnesota Army National Guard’s Camp Ripley-based 851st Vertical Engineer Company and the Civil Engineer Squadrons from the Minnesota Air National Guard’s 133rd Airlift Wing and 148th Fighter Wing have sent a number of troops to help with the labor intensive task of the timely remodel.     During the Best Warrior Competition in March, Staff Sgt. Gerald Peck motivated himself by carrying something special with him - the combat patch of Staff Sgt. Alex Toups, a Mississippi Army National Guardsman who was supposed to be at the competition, but passed away unexpectedly.   • Kansas National Guard fights Anderson Creek Fire with flight March 26-27, 2016

    Four UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters piloted and crewed by Kansas Army National Guard Soldiers joined the Anderson Creek wildfire fight March 26. The helicopters arrived in Medicine Lodge, Kansas, March 26 and dropped approximately 124 buckets of water, equating to an estimated total of more than 68,000 gallons, on active flames and hot spots as directed by incident officials March 26-27.
