'Exotic' Army Guard aviation unit bound for Iraq

The Brigade will organize its present structure to a Theater Aviation Battalion command and deploy for the Multi-National Corps Iraq.

Arkansas Soldiers Keep Watch on New Mexico Desert

Jay Sanders (right), from Hot Springs, Ark., take shelter from the bright New Mexico sun under the camouflage netting of their mountain top observation point. The Soldiers, members of the Arkansas National Guard's 39th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, are part of Task Force Arkansas participating in Operation Jump Start along the U.S. border with Mexico. From their outpost nearly 1,000 feet above the dessert floor, Inman, Bealer and Sanders can monitor movement in the desert on one side, vehicles along a major highway on a second side, and suspicious "stow aways" aboard railroad cars on a third side.

Arkansas Guard's 61st Civil Support Team Trains to Handle Radiological Situation

Sgt. 1st Class Larry Brents, of Sherwood, Ark., takes a reading from a gamma radiation sensor during training exercises Wednesday at the Defense Nuclear Weapons School located at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, N.M. Brents, and other members of the 61st Civil Support Team, were scanning the area to locate a radioactive sample instructors had hidden among vehicles in a parking area. The school trains civil support teams and first responders in response to accidents or terrorist situations where nuclear or radiological materials may be involved.

Re-enactors wait to welcome participants in the Lewis & Clark Youth Rendezvous sponsored by the National Guard at Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park in North Dakota in mid-August. About 300 high school students from all 50 states and four territories attended the weeklong celebration of the bicentennial of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

Eric Ladd, commander of the Camp Robinson based 449th Aviation Intermediate Maintenance Company of the 77th Aviation Brigade, prepares his troops to be manifested for a flight to Iraq yesterday. Ladd, of Benton, initially mobilized with his unit on Valentine's Day in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. The unit departed Fort Hood, Texas, on Sunday, August 20, after completing its initial mobilization training. Ladd's unit is deploying with the Texas National Guard's 36th Combat Aviation Brigade and will be responsible for maintenance of UH-60 Blackhawks, CH-47 Chinooks and AH-64 Apache helicopters in the Iraqi theatre of operations.
