The event took place during Northern Strike 22-1 (Winter Strike), a National Guard Bureau-sponsored exercise at Camp Grayling Joint Maneuver Training Center and Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center.

Florida Guardsman wears Americal patch in Afghanistan

Sgt. 1st Class William Pegler, the battalion fuel handler for the Florida National Guard's 3rd Battalion, 20th Special Forces Group deployed to Camp Montrond, Afghanistan, still wears an Americal Division combat patch he earned while serving in the Vietnam War. His unlit cigar is also a staple for the 58-year-old grandfather.

20th Special Forces Group rescues stranded residents

Members of the 20th Special Forces Group of the Mississippi Army National Guard launched rubber boats fitted with outboard motors to rescue residents of the flooded Jordan River Shores subdivision in Kiln, Miss., on Sept. 1. Six teams from the Jackson, Miss., based unit searched for anyone who remained in the subdivision, which flooded as a result of a tidal surge from Hurricane Gustav.
